Königshain Steinbruch
Today, my wife and I went on a beautiful trip just across the border to visit the Elysium Quarry.
Elysium Quarry is located in the Königshainer Berge area in the eastern part of Upper Lusatia, west of the city of Görlitz, Germany. This former quarry has been part of a protected landscape area since 1974, and a bird sanctuary was later established in one of its sections. Despite its protected status, the area is open to the public and offers a chance to explore both the natural surroundings and the history of stone mining. (See "Königshain Quarries" on Wikipedia.)
I must say, the region around Görlitz is incredibly picturesque.
A nature trail circles the flooded quarry, including remnants of old buildings and mining equipment. The entire route leads you through beautiful landscapes lined with rock formations and the remains of structures from the granite mining era. The water in the quarry shimmers with crystal clarity, and the view from above is absolutely breathtaking.
Even though the weather wasn't on our side, the scenery made it all worthwhile.
